The Premise – The ‘Exchange’: For your $30 fee, you will receive two $10 poker chips (you can purchase up to 5 more if you choose to at the event) and one 2 hour volunteer time chip (you can get as many of these as you want for free). Throughout the course of the night, you need to give these to innovations. You can give it to the person directly, or you can drop off your chips in the boxes at the registration on your way out. Regardless, innovations will be supported by time and money – the question is which will you support? Discover Innovative Ideas - SEE 'Pitch' Competition: This is not your standard pitch competition. This is simply an opportunity for everyone at the event to have 30 seconds to share their social innovation. Laurier's Centre for Sustainable Business will pick two winners who will receive a cash prize of $300 to help their social innovation develop and grow. This is a great way for everyone to hear what everyone is doing. It takes forever to have 200 individual conversations, but with 30 seconds to do so, you will really be able to discover innovation. If you have an idea or work for a socially innovative organization, tell us on the registration page here. Innovative Entertainment: From 5pm to 8pm there will be music featured throughout. About the Hosting Organization, Students Offering Support (SOS): SOS is a national social venture, headquartered in Waterloo. The organization has over 500 student volunteers who work with local university SOS chapters across Canada. Within each chapter, students teach their peers in exam-prep group review sessions which raises money for sustainable development projects around Latin America, built by SOS volunteers on outreach trips. What started as a school club back in 2004, SOS's Founder and Executive Director, Greg Overholt, has been able to grow it into a national social venture which has raised over $340,000 for various projects by teaching over 5,000 university students. The website is www.studentsofferingsupport.ca for more information. About the Idea: The idea initially came from an event held in Toronto called 'Bar Philanthropy' by an organization called DreamNow founded by Dev Aujla. Held in a local bar, the exchange idea was born and SOS wanted to adopt it and bring it to the Waterloo Region.
