Students Offering Support has been featured in various media outlets since our start in 2004. Gaining media exposure is a critical component to continually educating our country about the issues of child poverty and the work that our students are doing to help. 2010
  • August 3, 2010 - The Star: SOS keynote rejected travel visa into Canada: For SOS's 3rd annual Gala Banquet, we asked our Peru NGO director, Jorge, to come and speak. His travel visa was denied twice and The Star writes an article about his struggles and the frustrations of the immigration system.
  • June 1, 2010 - Register: SOS Annual Gala Banquet: This year, Waterloo plays host to SOS's 2nd Annual Year-End Gala banquet. This night is a time to celebrate the year and look into the next 12 months of raising marks, money, and roofs!
  • January 14, 2010 - High School SOS - funds to build Haiti School: High School SOS has arrived, helping students prepare for final exams in the GTA, Waterloo, and London Regions. Website is soshighschool.com, with the funds raised being spent on a school in Haiti.
2009
  • November 1, 2009 - SOS, Finalist for E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year: SOS's Founder & Executive Director was selected as one of the 4 finalists for Ontario's Young Entrepreneur, part of Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year Program
  • September 1, 2009 - NEWS: '09 Dev. Projects Complete: SOS funded and build 4 development projects in Peru, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Honduras. These projects were funded by the SOS chapter throughout the 2008-2009 year, and built by 65 SOS volunteers on outreach trips.
  • September 1, 2009 - NEWS: SOS grows again for 2010: SOS launches the 2009-2010 academic year with more university and city-wide high school chapters, increasing their goal to $200,000.
  • July 20, 2009 - Manulife partners with SOS: Manulife Financial becomes a national sponsor of Students Offering Support for the 2009-2010 year.
  • July 1, 2009 - Waterloo High School Launch Results: In the Waterloo Region, SOS lauched its first High School chapter, teaching maths and sciences for grades 9 through 12. Click to read the 1 page summary of the initiative.

  • March 31, 2009 - Breakfast Television with SOS Director: Watch an interview with SOS's Executive Director, Greg Overholt, on Breakfast Television talking about study tips and what parents can do to help.
  • January 23, 2009 - CANADA AM: Interview with SOS's Director: On Jan 23rd, Greg Overholt, Executive Director of Students Offering Support made an appearance on Canada AM, talking about SOS and the work students are doing across the country.

  • December 12, 2008 - CTV: News Story on SOS: Southwestern CTV came to Wilfrid Laurier University to see first hand the SOS model in action, interviewing volunteers and students as they attend an Exam-AID session for second year statistics.

Since 2005, SOS has attracted the attention of various local and national publications. As we continue to grow, we are always looking for champions in the media to help spread the who, the how, and most importantly, the why. Child poverty is a global epidemic which needs all the attention and focused efforts we can provide. The organziation is over 200 student leaders strong and still growing, but we are always looking to find others who are interested in getting involved. Find out how you can help spread the word.
