Each university chapter of Students Offering Support, operates the Exam-AID initiative. These are 2-3 hour volunteer-led group review sessions held shortly before an exam, taught by bright senior students who are proven communicators. Exam-AID's use SOS's unique teaching model to create an interactive learning environment, leaving student much more confident about the covered material. In addition to the review session, students are also provided with a take-home study guide to help them study for their approaching exam.

"Sometimes when you study by yourself you are not sure where you are compared to others. Most of the time I have no idea where I am at. SOS sessions allow me to see how I'm doing and if more effort needs to be put forth towards my studies."
Matt Wilson, BBA '09
Wilfrid Laurier University

The cost of an Exam-AID session is between $15 and $30 depending on length and coverage of the session.

Over the last four years, Students Offering Support has tutored over 5,000 students and raised over $240,000 for sustainable development projects in countries around Latin America.

For the 2009-2010 school year, the 15+ SOS chapters are working together to raise $200,000 for various projects that will be built at the end of each year on SOS volunteer outreach trips.

With over 100 million children worldwide without access to the education needed to break the cycle of poverty, our efforts are focused around providing sustainable educational support to communities in developing nations, helping children have the opportunity to gain a quality education.

All of our projects are not only funded, but also built by SOS volunteers on annual volunteer outreach trips. Students travel to a community in Latin America, at their own expense, to spend roughly two weeks building their project, seeing first hand the impact of their time and effort on the lives of others.

To select, facilitate, and monitor SOS's projects, our volunteers work very closely with a local NGO which has a strong relationship with the community to best determine where the need exists, ensure the trips are properly organized, and support / follow-up with the target community long after the group has left the country.

"Participating in both the fundraising aspect of the trip to Belize and the trip itself was one of the best experiences I had as a Laurier student. SOS allowed me to see at first hand the difference I was making."

Since 2005, SOS has attracted the attention of various local and national publications. As we continue to grow, we are always looking for champions in the media to help spread the who, the how, and most importantly, the why. Child poverty is a global epidemic which needs all the attention and focused efforts we can provide. The organziation is over 200 student leaders strong and still growing, but we are always looking to find others who are interested in getting involved. Find out how you can help spread the word.
